Who doesn't make charcuterie boards these days? Ours are genuine centre pieces of any table. Not only because of the unique top pattern but also because of their story. Here are two of them.
The three first images below show a smaller walnut board that was thrown out to off-cuts because of the weird shape - one of the live edges was half cut while milling. We couldn't stand a thought of throwing it away or losing the beauty of the wood figure, if this one was cut down to pieces for glued projects. So we hand formed that straight edge to make it follow the same organic outline of the live edge and adjusted the top pattern to fit into this new shape.
The lighter board shown in this gallery is made from a trunk of an elm that was cut down in Winnipeg among hundreds of other elm trees. It happened after Dutch elm disease had been detected in that particular tree. This disease has put urban elms on the edge of extinction all over North America. Elm became a very rare material in woodworking and furniture making because of that. So this beautiful tree could have ended up in a wood chipper. But thanks to the environmentally conscious guys from urban-lumber.ca it was milled and brought to our shop to be turned into this gorgeous one meter long table centre piece.
Each board has an organic looking pattern on top, that is recessed to the 3mm depth. Part of the unique design concept, this pattern also has a practical purpose of organizing and better presentation of food on board. But being that shallow, it will never become an obstacle for any creative ideas as you can place your products right across the recessions in any direction.
